Great stuff! BUT you write “boomtown-come-metropolis.” What you meant, whether you knew it or not, was “boomtown-cum-metropolis.” It’s a Latin thing, and I wouldn’t expect anyone to understand in this day and age. But just as you aspire to certain standards in clothing (and thank God for it!), some of us aspire to certain standards in language as well.

I love that Oscar was so able to be persuaded by beauty, and to abandon a prejudice once he had been shown how wrong he was. That takes an extraordinarily strong psyche to do that.

Very well written article, about something I hadn’t ever pieced together about Oscar’s attitude to the Chinese culture.
